About the museum
Naturum Getterön lies on the edge of Getterön nature reserve, just north of Varberg's city centre. The area was an island until the early 1930s, when a road embankment divided the channel into a northern and a southern bay. The northern bay silted up with nutrient-rich sediment and dredged material, but was restored in the early 1990s with open water, wet meadows and a pond with nesting islands. The reserve has been protected since 1970, is part of Natura 2000 and is one of the most bird-rich areas in Northern Europe.
Naturum is run with the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) as the principal and serves as a gateway to the reserve. The permanent exhibition on the lower floor is child-friendly and is about Halland's habitat types and the birds that live there. The upper floor hosts changing exhibitions. From the panoramic windows visitors can look out over the area through telescopes, and at the naturum desk you can borrow binoculars, a bird book and a checklist free of charge.
Nature guides arrange guided walks and bird-watching mornings, and the reserve has hides (gömslen), an observation tower and trails. Next to naturum there is a café, a shop selling binoculars and a playground.
