About the museum
Röde Hanens museum is located next to Katarina fire station on Södermalm in Stockholm. The fire station is the oldest facility of the Greater Stockholm fire service and is considered the world's oldest fire station still in use on the same site. The museum is run by the voluntary association Röde Hanen, which was formed in 1933 and for a long time wished for a museum of its own.
The premises are a former stable from the 1850s, built for the Town Guard (Stadsvakten) and later used by the police and the fire brigade as a storehouse. When the fire station was rebuilt in 1986–1990, the stable was freed up for museum use. The museum opened in the early 1990s after extensive work by firefighters, fire station staff, the association's members and the City Museum (Stadsmuseet). The whole museum was renovated by volunteers in 2016.
The objects on display come from the fire brigade's earliest period, from the end of the 1800s onwards. The core is Röde Hanen's archive and collections, with, among other things, a fire alarm telegraph in marble and wood and horse-drawn fire pumps. A steam pump from 1907 and a motor fire pump from 1931 are owned by the association but do not fit into the premises. The museum also has a model of Katarina fire station.
