About the museum
Bergkvara sjöfartsmuseum (maritime museum) is run by Bergkvara hembygdsgille (local heritage guild), which was formed in 1945, and is located in a century-old harbour warehouse by the harbour with sea views. The warehouse itself is of museum interest. An intact ship smithy on the nearby Dalaskär also belongs to the museum.
The exhibition shows photographs of people and ships, captains' boards, models and objects such as navigation equipment, rigging parts and shipwright's tools. There are also objects and pictures about the importance of eel fishing since the Middle Ages and about the pilotage (lots) and pine (fur) services. On the ground floor there is a complete boatbuilding workshop.
Söderåkra, the long-stretched coastal parish, was for a long time one of the country's most shipping-dependent parishes. At the beginning of the 1900s Bergkvara was one of Sweden's two or three largest home ports for sailing vessels, and since the early 1800s there have been shipyards in Bergkvara, Djursvik, Grämkulla and Skeppevik.
