About the museum
Degerhamns hembygdsmuseum (local history museum) is run by Södra Möckleby–Degerhamns hembygdsförening (local heritage society), which was founded in 1949, and is located in Degerhamn harbour. The museum's themes are industry, trade and shipping.
The collections are dominated by industrial history linked to Cementa, whose activities build on traditions from the 1700s. The shipping exhibition is characterised by many photographs of ships with a connection to Degerhamn. The exhibition shows how the cement industry dominated the community, both as a major workplace and as the owner of a considerable fleet of smaller motor sailing vessels (motorseglare).
The factory has reduced its activities, and therefore no factory visits are arranged any longer. The society also has a homestead cottage (hembygdsstuga) north of Södra Möckleby church, which probably dates from the 1700s.
