About the museum
The Krusenstiernska gården lies behind a red fence in the old town of Kalmar, where the medieval core of the town was before the fire of 1647. On the site, summer plots (sommarlyckor) for cultivation were laid out, and in 1762 four plots were merged into one. The present main building and summerhouse (lusthus) were erected around 1800, and the other houses during the 1800s.
Hermina von Krusenstierna bought the farm in 1874 and ran it as a self-sufficient town garden with flowers, vegetables and fruit, and much of the harvest was sold at the market square (torget). After her death the farm was inherited by her foster daughter Hulda Nydell, who in 1940 bequeathed it to Kalmar City and the Kalmar läns fornminnesförening (Kalmar County Antiquities Association). Her wish was that the farm should be preserved as a memorial to a bygone era and be accessible to the public.
Today the farm is run by a foundation with representatives from Kalmar Municipality, Kalmar läns museum (Kalmar County Museum) and the von Krusenstierna family association. The buildings and the garden have been a protected building since 1985. The main building is a home furnished with heirlooms from three generations, and the outbuildings show working life on the farm. During the season there is a garden café, a shop and cultural events.
