About the museum
Värmlands länsfängelse (Värmland County Prison) in Karlstad was inaugurated in 1847 and was one of Sweden's first cellular prisons. The building is in neoclassical style, inspired by ancient Greek and Italian architecture. During the 121 years that the prison was in use, thousands of prisoners were held in its 91 cells. The prison was closed in 1968.
In 1986 the building was converted into a hotel, and the old cells became hotel rooms. Today it is run as Home Hotel Bilan with 73 rooms. The building's origins have been well preserved, and in the hotel's basement there is a prison museum where you can see what the isolation cells looked like and read about the history of the house.
