About the museum
Naturum Värmland lies in Mariebergsskogen in Karlstad, in the middle of the Klarälven delta between old forest, shoreline meadows and water. The building is one of Sweden's naturum visitor centres, which work to awaken interest in nature, and it receives over 100,000 visits each year. Mariebergsskogen is a large park area of around 78 hectares with park, forest land and wetland.
In the basic exhibition visitors learn about Värmland's forest, wetland and lake with all their senses. For example, you can listen to the sounds of fish under water, hear birdsong and smell the scent of beaver. On the upper floor there is a predator corner with Värmland's large predators, including the wolf Ylva. In the middle of the building there is a giant bird's egg that serves as a lecture hall and shows a nature film by Bo Landin about Värmland's nature over one year.
Outside the building there is an outdoor exhibition about pollinators and a demonstration apiary, run together with Värmlands Biodlardistrikt (Värmland Beekeepers' District). Nature guides arrange guided tours, lectures, bird walks and treasure hunts, and on a loop of just over one kilometre through the old forest a quiz trail (tipspromenad) can be walked every day. The house also shows temporary exhibitions, often photo exhibitions with nature themes.
