About the museum
The building Sandgrund on Sandgrundsudden in Karlstad was built as a restaurant on the initiative of the master builder Paul Jardeby and inaugurated in 1960, to designs by the architect Uno Asplund. At the start of the 1960s the restaurant was counted among the country’s largest and most modern and in the 1970s it became a dance palace with visitors from large parts of Sweden and Norway. During the 1980s the country’s biggest dance bands played here several evenings a week.
From the early 1990s the dance venues lost visitors to the discotheque, and in 2003 the restaurant was converted into a bar. Karlstad Municipality bought the building in 2011, and it was rebuilt as an art hall for Lars Lerin, which opened in June 2012. Lars Lerin is considered the Nordic region’s leading watercolour artist and is also an author; he also works in oil, woodcut and copperplate printing.
Sandgrund is the first of today’s three art halls that show permanent exhibitions of Lerin’s works, alongside Lars Lerin Kragerø in Norway and Kabusa Lars Lerin. The hall was awarded the Tourism Prize of the Year 2016. Lerin’s exhibition is shown all year round, and in the White Room (Vita Rummet) works from Lerin’s private collections and guest exhibitions are shown.
