About the museum
Gemla hembygdsförening (local heritage society) was founded in 1937, and the homestead museum was opened in August 1970. The farm lies in Gemla, about 13 kilometres west of Växjö.
The buildings contain several themes. The Ellandarummet has unusual wall and ceiling paintings. The Pär Lagerkvistrummet tells the story of Nobel laureate Pär Lagerkvist's life and literary work, and the Gransholmsrummet reflects the activities at Gransholms bruk, where paper was made from 1802 to 1979.
The toy museum shows toys from the more than fourteen factories that existed in Gemla, from the late 1800s to the present day. Sweden's first toy factory started in Gemla in 1866. In a nearby barn, tools from earlier times are displayed, and Ängsladan and Falkabacken are among the oldest surviving buildings in the district.
