About the museum
The Museum of Psychiatric History opened in March 1985 in the 600-square-metre building from 1826 that was popularly known as the “stora dårhuset” (great madhouse), at Sigfridsområdet in Växjö, where Sankt Sigfrids sjukhus is located. The museum is run by Region Kronoberg and shows the development of mental health care from the Middle Ages to today.
The collection comprises just over 4,000 objects, including care equipment, clothing, technical equipment, archive material, photographs, artworks and specialist literature. Older and newer treatment methods are shown together with objects that illustrate the social, architectural, trade-union and care-ideological development.
The exhibitions deal, among other things, with the development of the hospital grounds, socio-therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, treatments through the ages, the home of an attendant (vaktpiga or vaktdräng) and a chapel. On the upper floor there is an exhibition on dental care, with a treatment room from the 1950s and a dental library collection. The stories are conveyed by guides who have themselves worked in psychiatry or dentistry.
