About the museum
Grafiska museet in Helsingborg began in 1988, when the Graphic Workers' Union, branch 5 (Grafiska Fackförbundet), marked its centenary and staged the exhibition “Typer, Tryck och Typografer” in the old vicarage at Fredriksdal. The exhibition was staffed by retired and working graphic artists and attracted great interest. Machines were borrowed from the city's printing firms and from the graphic arts training at Rönnowska skolan.
In 1993 the city decided to build a larger house in the Fredriksdal town block. The building, which consists of two joined house bodies, was recreated after original drawings and photographs of houses from the early 19th century that had stood in central Helsingborg and were demolished in 1913. The museum was inaugurated on 21 April 1995.
The museum is run by a non-profit association with grants from the municipality, sponsors and members, who staff the museum at weekends every summer. The activities are based on techniques from the time before digitalisation. The museum looks after its machines and uses them every day for typesetting, printing and papermaking.
