About the museum

Helsingborgs idrottsmuseum is run by Föreningen Idrottsarkivet (FIA, the Sports Archive Association), which was formed in 1976 on the initiative of the city's sports journalists and sports organisations. The association's statutes stated that it should work for a sports museum in the city. The museum opened on 20 October 1986.

For a long time the association had no premises of its own and used older meeting rooms and smaller exhibition spaces, among other things. In 2013 the museum moved from the former IOGT house on Carl Krooks gata to Idrottens hus on Mellersta Stenbocksgatan. There are exhibitions, archives, a library and rooms for meetings and events.

The museum shows objects, photographs and films from Helsingborg's sporting life, and a special room honours the racing driver Gunnar Nilsson. The association arranges lectures, film evenings and visits, and each year awards the title Årets idrottare i Helsingborg (Sportsperson of the Year in Helsingborg).
