About the museum
The museum is in Helsingborg's old children's hospital at Bergaliden, which was built in 1888–1889 to drawings by the architect Mauritz Frohm. The house was donated by the estate owner Peter von Möller to an association formed in 1888 to provide free health care for children from poor families. The two round wards were to give good air circulation and sunlight all day. In 1944 children's care moved to a newly built hospital, and the old house was then used, among other things, for aftercare of polio patients, as offices and as a storeroom.
When the county council wanted to demolish the house, the association that now runs the museum, Helsingborgs Medicinhistoriska Förening (Helsingborg Medical History Association), was formed in 1982. The restored house was inaugurated on 18 April 1986, and the museum opened to the public on 21 October 1986. The medical history collections had previously been shown in the Dunkerska villan (Dunker Villa).
The exhibitions are spread over three floors and deal with views on health and disease, the architecture of care, the history of paediatric and child health care, and pharmaceutical companies in Helsingborg such as Leo and Viggo. Hosts show visitors around during open house.
