About the museum
The smithy lies on the Östergötland plain just outside Linköping, in a white-painted building from 1928. Here the original “Alvar-sme” lived and worked until his death in 1983, and you can read about him in the smithy’s small museum. Afterwards other activities were housed in the building, and the workshop stood empty when Stefan Hagdahl and his wife moved in in 2012. What remained was the heart of the smithy, the forge hearth (ässjan).
Around the forge hearth Stefan Hagdahl has built a complete smithy with plenty of room for visitors. Besides everything needed for forging there are curiosities in the form of old tools and crafts. The first part of the workshop is fitted out as a shop with forged items for sale. Since 2020 he has worked full-time as a smith, making, among other things, candlesticks, marshal’s holders (marschallhållare) and made-to-measure chandeliers. In 2018 he received the Östgöta-dagarna craft prize. The smithy holds courses and guided study visits.
