About the museum
Kalmar Sjöfartsmuseum is located at the far end of Kattrumpan in central Kalmar, next to the old varmbadhuset (hot-bath house) at Södra Långgatan 81. It is a smaller museum with artefacts from the history of shipping, and visitors can have a guide who has sailed the seven seas himself and tells of life at sea.
The museum has about 3,000 objects, among them ship models, captains’ boards (kaptenstavlor) and exotic items from near and far, and it is counted among the most interesting of the country’s smaller museums. The aim is to preserve the genuine atmosphere of a traditional maritime museum. Collecting is ongoing, and each year the museum receives gifts from individuals and companies.
The museum documents local shipping, shipping companies, vessels and boat types, Kalmar shipyards, the harbour, stevedoring and seafarers from the Kalmar area, and today the whole history of the 20th-century shipyards in Kalmar is gathered here. All the work is done by voluntary effort, and the operation is supported by Kalmar Sjöfartsförening (Kalmar Maritime Society). The museum is on the second floor and has five rooms.
