About the museum
Chain manufacturing in the area dates back to the 1700s. The smith Bengt Jönsson-Loberg started a chain business in Släthult at the end of the 1700s, selling mainly to farms. The business stayed within the family for six generations. In 1905 Otto began making chains in Killeberg, and after a fire in Släthult in 1923 the whole operation was moved there.
In 1926 automatic machines were bought, which were the first of their kind in the country. Competition from new products such as nylon rope reduced demand, and closure began around 1990. Tryggve Hillerström ran the company until 2002.
In 2003 Loshults hembygdsförening (local heritage association) bought the factory, which has been restored to its original condition and is run as an industrial museum. After many hours of voluntary work the automatic machines can again be shown in operation, and the factory also has a forging section. During demonstrations some of the machines are used to make chain.
