About the museum

Kulturrum i Ratan is an exhibition shown in Tullgården in Ratan, a village on the Västerbotten coast in Robertsfors Municipality. The exhibition was inaugurated in 1998 and was produced by Hugin och Munin. It explains why Ratan is classed as a site of national interest for cultural heritage conservation (riksintresse för kulturmiljövården).

The exhibition is built around three themes: land uplift, the harbour era (hamnepoken) and the war events of 1809. Through them, visitors learn more about Ratan's nature and the place's special position in Västerbotten's history.

Tullgården was built in 1868 as an office and residence for the customs officer and is the oldest and best-preserved building from customs operations in Västerbotten. After customs operations ceased in 1905, the house was used as housing for sawmill workers, a children's colony, a holiday home for housewives, and as a restaurant and cultural centre. During the 1700s and 1800s Ratan was an important harbour, sometimes called the harbour of Norrland.
