About the museum
The Häggströmska handelsmuseet is in Dalkarlså in Bygdeå parish, in the building known as Gammelgården by Dalkarlså manor. It houses a preserved old village general store and several living rooms with period furnishings. The museum is run by Bygdeå hembygdsförening (Bygdeå local heritage society).
The Häggström family ran one of the most important businesses in Västerbotten in the 1800s, with trade, shipping, sawmills, shipyards and ironworks. After freedom of trade was introduced in 1846, it became permitted to run a trading shop in the countryside. When the manor house was ready to move into in 1850, Gammelgården could be taken into use for trade and office work.
In the trading shop, Häggström sold goods from his works, his farm and his sea voyages, as well as items bought up in the countryside. The range included, among other things, salt, tobacco, iron and glassware, flour, coffee, sugar, yellow peas, soap, cloth, yarn and hemp.
