About the museum
Löfstad slott (Löfstad Castle) was built in 1660 by the nobleman Axel Lillie. After a fire in 1750 only the south wing remained, and the castle was rebuilt with three floors and portals from the 17th century preserved. The families Lillie, De la Gardie, von Fersen and Piper lived there, and the castle was in the family's ownership for nine generations.
The last owner, Emilie Piper, died in 1926 and bequeathed the castle to Östergötlands museum. The interior with art, furniture, clothing and table service has been preserved as she left it, and the castle therefore gives a picture of a manor-house home from about a hundred years ago.
Besides the castle there is an English park, a castle shop in the old manor stable, an inn and a trading garden with a café. The operation is run by Östergötlands museum.
