About the museum
The Medeltidsmuseet, formerly Stockholms medeltidsmuseum (Stockholm Medieval Museum), opened in 1986 on Helgeandsholmen under Riksplan and Norrbro. The museum was built around medieval remains found during the excavations ahead of the extension of the Riksdag building in 1978–1980, the so-called Riksgropen, and in the same year it was named European Museum of the Year.
Among the preserved finds were parts of Gustav Vasa's city wall from 1530, the churchyard by Helgeandshuset from the 14th century and a passage from the early 18th century. Among the museum's objects were the Riddarholmsskeppet (the Riddarholm ship), a late medieval vessel found in 1930, and the runestone Sö 274. The museum was run by the City of Stockholm and told the story of how the city arose and developed during the Middle Ages.
The museum's premises under Norrbro were closed to the public on 5 November 2023, because the Riksdag administration needs the space. A new museum is planned in the Börshuset at Stortorget in Gamla stan, next to Storkyrkan, but no date for the move or the opening has been set. In the meantime the museum runs tours, city walks and lectures in Gamla stan, and objects from the old exhibition are kept in storage.
