About the museum

Museet Gamla Kosta is run by Ekeberga hembygdsförening (local heritage association), which works closely with Kosta glassworks. Since 1971 the association has been housed in a green-painted house from 1887, whose oldest parts were built by the forester Axel Hummel, who was employed to look after the works' forests and later became managing director of the glassworks.

The museum relies on the voluntary work and knowledge of its members and presents the history of the district and of the industries that exist and have existed in the parish. The exhibition tells of older glass production, of how quartz stone was quarried by hand and used in the glass, of the railway's importance for Kosta, and of life in the past. There is also a large collection of old glass and an extensive local heritage archive.

The museum also shows works by the artist Sven Pihlström and his mosaic works. The association arranges activities, sells books about Kosta and has a garden with a music pavilion that is open to visitors.
