About the museum

Råbergskvarn och stamp lies by the Sandsjöån river in Orsa Finnmark, about three kilometres north-east of Östra Råberget. The fulling mill (stamp) was built around 1860 by the brothers Elis and Gustaf Eliasson from Östra Råberget, and the mill was built at about the same time. The site was chosen with great care so that differences in level, rocks and natural ponds could be used to the full.

Streams and rivers were used for centuries to drive mills, fulling mills and sawmills, and there is evidence that mills existed in Orsa as early as the 1500s. In the fulling mill, woven woollen cloth was fulled in warm water to make vadmal, a thick, warm and hard-wearing cloth that shrinks considerably during the process.

Orsa Besparingsskog maintains the fulling mill and the mill. Every year at the end of August a mill and fulling mill day is held here, where pupils from Mora Folkhögskola full their own handwoven fabrics and visitors can see the old crafts in their original setting.
