About the museum

Furudals bruk (Furudal Ironworks) was founded in 1709 by the inventor Birger Elfwing to make cannons for Karl XII's campaigns. The iron came from the company's own mines in Falun and Leksand. After about forty years the arms production ceased, and the works turned to bar iron and manufacturing forge work. From 1752 it was owned by Benjamin Sandel, who manufactured ploughs on a factory basis about a hundred years before his time. The works reached its heyday from 1808 under the owner Isac Gustaf Clason d.y. (the Younger), when the production of heavy anchor chains put Furudal on the map. The last chain was forged in 1883.

Today Furudals bruk is a well-preserved works environment with a hotel, conference venues and a golf course, but also several museums run by Stiftelsen Furudals Bruks kulturhus (the Furudals Bruk Cultural House Foundation). Norsk Veteranmuseum tells the story of the Norwegian police troops who were trained at Furudal in 1943–1945, and Landsbygdsmuseet, in the new cowshed, shows the development of agriculture and forestry during the 1900s, with a shoemaker's workroom and the old toll mill. Edvin Bodin Museet opened in 2019 and shows part of the artist Edvin Bodin's collection.
