About the museum
Sägnernas hus started in 1996 on a converted, extended and renovated farm in Sandhem in Mullsjö Municipality. The operation is run by a non-profit association and has grown into a combined cultural facility with a museum, dance floor, restaurant and accommodation.
In 2004 the museum was inaugurated with folk belief as its theme. The folklife researcher and author Ebbe Schön (1929–2022), who wrote a long series of books on Nordic folk belief, took part in the inauguration and was afterwards an important source of inspiration for the museum’s development. The figures in the museum are modelled on the descriptions of folklife researchers and depict beings such as the troll, the näcken (water spirit), the skogsfrun (forest lady), the mara (nightmare spirit), the elves and the bäckahäst (brook horse).
The museum lies in the same area as the lodge, where dance evenings, markets and concerts are held. The association welcomes groups, school classes and tourists and offers guided tours of the folk belief museum.
