About the museum
A tå is a village of crofts (torp) and backstugor where the poorest people of peasant society lived. When the tå population in Åsle began to move away at the end of the 19th century, many cottages were torn down, and in most parts of the country such settlements have disappeared. In Åsle people realised that a cultural heritage was being lost. In 1923, when only about ten cottages remained, Åsle, Mularp and Tiarp local heritage society (hembygdsförening) was formed to preserve Åsle Tå, and cottage after cottage was bought as it became vacant.
Today Åsle Tå is Sweden’s largest collection of backstugor. The cottages stand where they originally were, along the winding Tågatan and by Kolaforsen, in a historic setting from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors can walk between the cottages, see the authentic interiors and learn about the people who lived there and their lives. The site also has a smithy, a skifte cowshed (a farm building from the land-redistribution era), a mill and an agricultural museum. An information shed with display screens tells the story of Åsle Tå, the region and the sights nearby.
Åsle Tå lies in the Åsle basin below Ålleberg and Karleby on Falbygden, a landscape rich in ancient monuments. The society also runs a restaurant and café, and once a year the Tå Day is held with a market and activities.
