About the museum
Smedsbygget (the Smithy Building) is the homestead of Turinge-Taxinge hembygdsförening (Turinge-Taxinge Local Heritage Society) in Nykvarn. According to the association, the house was built at the end of the 17th century as a wing with dwellings for the smiths at the nearby works. For a period the building was used as an old people's home before the local heritage society took it over.
The ironworks activity in the area began in 1590, when Duke Karl (hertig Karl) gave Hans Ulfsson permission to establish a hammer forge at Turinge ström (Turinge stream). In 1680 a steelworks and a manufactory for copper and iron sheet were started. The ironworks era came to an end in the middle of the 19th century and was succeeded by paper manufacturing, which ceased in 1971.
The local heritage society was formed in 1971 and covers the parishes of Turinge and Taxinge, which today form Nykvarn Municipality. The museum shows objects, maps and photographs on the history of the district, and the association is digitising its pictures from the past. A miniature of the hammer forge can be seen and heard in the homestead. The house is also used for programme evenings, open houses and as a meeting room.
