About the museum

Stockholms Kultursällskap för Ånga och Järnväg, SKÅJ, is a non-profit association founded in Stockholm in 1981 to show the transition from steam to electric traction on the railways. The association works to restore, preserve and use older railway vehicles, mainly from the 1930s to the 1960s, and has around 80 vehicles, a number of which are fully operational.

The collections are kept in the association's engine sheds in Krylbo and Sala. They show Swedish steam and electric locomotives as well as passenger and goods wagons connected with the development of the railways in the 20th century. The museums in Sala and Krylbo are open by arrangement by telephone.

The Krylbo engine shed is also the venue for the association's vehicle meetings and open days, where visitors can look at the locomotives and hear about the history of the shed and the people who worked there. The association also organises train trips using trains dating from the mid-20th century.
