About the museum
Karlfeldtsgården, formerly Tolvmansgården, in Karlbo in Folkärna parish is the childhood home of the Swedish poet and Nobel laureate Erik Axel Karlfeldt. He was born here on 20 July 1864 and grew up in a large farming family spanning three generations. The name comes from tolvman, a lay judge at the district court (häradsrätt), and such tolvmän had lived on the farm for generations.
The main farmhouse was built in the mid-18th century and in winter was used as a dwelling for both family and servants. The red wing building was added in the 1820s and served as a summer residence and bakehouse. The Liderlängan facing the old village street is the only surviving building from the time when the farm was run as an agricultural holding. The farm's buildings have been listed buildings (byggnadsminne) since 1986.
The farm passed out of the family's ownership during Karlfeldt's student years in 1885 and returned to the family in 1967, when his son Sune and his wife Mary became owners. They restored the houses, opened the farm as a cultural farm (kulturgård) and laid out a miniature pleasure garden, inspired by the poet's pleasure garden at Sjugare. In 1984 they sold the farm to Avesta Municipality, which now owns and runs it.
