About the museum
Töllstorps industrimuseum lies on the Töllstorp farm lands north of Gnosjö. During the 18th and 19th centuries several small water-powered industries ran on the farm, and knowledge of wire drawing spread here from the Gevärsfaktoriet (Rifle Factory) in Jönköping, which later became Huskvarna. In the Gnosjö area during the 19th century there were a couple of hundred wire-drawing works and hammer mills, often as a supplement to farming. The wire became the basis for products such as hooks and eyes (hyskor), needles and mouse traps, and the craft gradually turned into small industry.
The museum was founded in 1965 by Gnosjö Local Heritage Association in cooperation with Gnosjö Municipality, and the association keeps it open and arranges viewings. At first the wire was drawn by horsepower, but around 1750 the works switched to water power. Today the site has about ten buildings from the 18th century onwards, including two surviving mills, a smithy and Gnosjö’s first automatic machine from 1881. A mill from the early 18th century burned down in 2016, and only the water wheel remains.
Visitors follow a guided round that mostly runs on gravel road. Wire drawing is demonstrated in the traditional way, and the museum has objects made from Gnosjö wire, such as whisks, rat traps and hairpins.
