About the museum
Västerbacken is the origin of Holmsund. Dickson & Co bought the area in the 1840s as a loading place for the Baggböle sawmill at the mouth of the Ume River (Umeälven), and workers' dwellings, a church, a school and a vicarage were later built there. Nine of the original dwellings remain, and in one of them a sawmill museum has been set up.
The exhibition depicts the sawmill workers' living, working and leisure environment, and the development of the sawmill industry from the 19th century to the 1950s. It also tells how the temperance and free church movements affected the sawmill in Holmsund. The museum is run by Stiftelsen Skärgårdens Sågverksmuseum (Archipelago Sawmill Museum Foundation) and is open during the summer months with guided viewings.
