About the museum
The site on the Egnacherweg was once the tank depot of the Swiss federal Alkoholverwaltung (Federal Alcohol Administration), built around 1880 to store industrial alcohol. After the end of the state alcohol monopoly, it passed to the municipality of Romanshorn; in 2007 the entrepreneur and racing driver Fredy Lienhard bought the vacant, heritage-protected halls. After the conversion, the exhibition opened in May 2009.
The idea of showing his private vehicle collection to the public came to Fredy Lienhard when he led a fourth-grade class through his cars and experienced the children's enthusiasm. Today around 120 road-going sports cars, supercars, classics and racing cars are displayed in five exhibition halls with eight exhibition areas; the selection changes over the course of the year. The rooms include the Klassik-Salon in the basement, the Supersport-Galerie, the Racing-Halle with vehicles from rallying, Le Mans, IndyCar and Formula 1, and the Stahltank, a freestanding steel colossus 20 meters in diameter spread over three levels. The Lista Racing Box tells the career of Fredy Lienhard, and since 2021 the Clay Regazzoni Honor Room has been devoted to the most successful Swiss Formula 1 driver, with vehicles, trophies and mementos.
Besides the museum, the autobau AG also owns the Autobau Factory, a commercial center for automotive businesses, and the Carlounge with parking spaces. The halls also serve as an event venue. Visitors come to the museum on Sundays; the bistro in the Pitlane lobby is accessible even without a ticket.
