About the museum

The railway reached Romanshorn as early as 1855. In 1898 the Nordostbahn put the three-track locomotive shed into service, which today forms the heart of the adventure world. About twenty years ago the foundation Stiftung Historisches Bahnhof-Ensemble Romanshorn took over the site with the locomotive shed and the old signal boxes I and II from the SBB under a building lease, in order to preserve the historic railway heritage.

Museum operations, with tours and events, are run by the association Locorama, founded on 20 January 2014 and carried almost entirely by volunteers. The locomotives and carriages on the site belong to associations or private individuals, such as Eurovapor and the Verein Historische Mittel-Thurgau-Bahn; many are still operational, while others are parked as witnesses of their time. It is precisely this mixture at the former site of railway operations that makes the grounds so appealing.

The facilities include the signal gantry of 1913, which was dismantled in 2003 during the rebuilding of the station and, from 2011 to 2013, restored by a specially founded association and re-erected at Locorama. There are also a garden railway (built up since 2009, with a turntable), a draisine, a driving simulator and a former training signal box that is connected to a model railway.
