About the museum
The Dorfmuseum Bennwil is located in the community hall on the village square of the Basel-Landschaft village of Bennwil and is run by a museum commission of the municipality. The collection and information panels span the period from prehistory to the present and show how people in the village lived and worked.
Topics include the inhabitants, the authorities then and now, church and school, everyday life in the home, and crafts and farming. One special section is devoted to silk ribbon weaving (Posamenterei), which was long widespread in the upper Baselbiet; this includes a working ribbon loom. There is also a geology section with landscape forms, rocks and fossils, as well as a natural history display with species lists and photos of the animals and plants within the municipal boundary. These exhibitions help visitors better understand the nature trails around Bennwil.
Individual pieces on display include the Schöntal baptismal bowl, an old Bennwil parlour and remains of the heating system of a Roman villa. A guide to the nature trails and a short village history are available at the museum. The museum also organises guided tours, excursions within the municipal boundary and information evenings, which are announced separately.
