About the museum
The Ettingen Cultural History Association was founded in 1976, after a parade by the music society under the motto “Ettingen 50 Years Ago” had brought together many old implements. To keep them from disappearing again, the idea of a village museum arose. In 1980 an old farmhouse at the corner of Hauptstrasse and Schanzgasse came up for sale, on the condition that a museum be set up in it. In 1981 the Ettingen Village Museum Foundation was established, which bought the house and still owns it today; the association is responsible for maintenance and operation.
The “Guggerhuus” is a classic farmhouse with living quarters, stable and barn, built between 1800 and 1820 and almost completely destroyed by fire in 1904, after which it was rebuilt. To finance the renovation, a three-day village festival was held in 1983. The village museum was able to open in 1987. Later, the barn, wash house and stable were converted into rooms for smaller events, which have been available for private celebrations since 1989, and the conversion of the barn and hayloft created a room with a gallery for larger festivities and exhibitions.
In the museum, the association shows exhibits from the history of Ettingen as well as tools and craft implements from days gone by. It also maintains markets, exhibitions and local customs.
