About the museum

The Froschmuseum (Frog Museum) is a private museum run by collectors Elfi Hiss and Rolf Rindlisbacher and is considered the first frog museum in Switzerland. It has been based in Münchenstein near Basel since 1992, today in the basement of the HandwerkStadt, a shopping centre for tradespeople. The collection has since grown to over 10,000 frog figurines.

On display are frogs made of countless materials – from glass, wood and porcelain to chocolate and marzipan, plush and candle wax – and in the most varied forms, such as piggy banks, lamps, radios, soap dispensers or Christmas baubles. Stamps, coins, cushions, plates and other everyday objects with a frog motif are also part of the collection.

The museum is financed through donations and the sale of duplicate figurines at flea markets and collectors' fairs. During the coronavirus pandemic, the museum had to close in 2020 for the first time in its history; operations have been back to normal since January 2022. In recent years visitor numbers have increased, partly thanks to posts on social media.
