About the museum
The Museum Eduard Spörri in Wettingen stands on the site of the former studio of the sculptor Eduard Spörri (1901–1995). After training as a stonemason and studying in Zurich, Munich and Paris, Spörri became one of the best-known figurative sculptors in the canton of Aargau, taking his inspiration from Auguste Rodin and Aristide Maillol. He left behind sculptures, fountain figures, reliefs, paintings, drawings and prints. Between 1985 and 1994 he converted his studio in Wettingen into a museum; the house opened in 2009.
The museum is run by the Eduard Spörri Foundation, which is dedicated to the artistic estate and to nurturing art in memory of the sculptor, and which was founded on the initiative of companies and families from the region. A circle of friends and a circle of patrons support its work. Dr. Marc Philip Seidel has been curator since 2019.
Today the museum shows contemporary art indoors and outdoors and sets it in dialogue with Spörri's work; exhibitions, readings, theatre performances and concerts alternate. Around 100 of the sculptor's works can be found in public spaces in the region, for example at village fountains, squares, schools and churches, about 30 of them in Wettingen and Baden alone. For families, there is the “Ängeliweg”, a children's trail from Wettingen Abbey to the museum. Admission is free; a donation of your choice is welcome.
