About the museum
The Elektromuseum of Regionalwerke AG Baden is located in the Kappelerhof power plant on the Limmat. The Elektrizitätsgesellschaft Baden put the canal power plant into operation in September 1892, making it one of the oldest power plants in the canton of Aargau. Its origins are closely tied to the company Brown Boveri & Cie., which was then the largest consumer of electricity in Baden.
Between 1974 and 1976 the plant was thoroughly renovated and annual electricity production more than doubled. Between 2003 and 2007 the canal power plant was converted into a run-of-river power plant with a new weir. In the old turbine hall of 1918, a fully preserved machine set remained in its original location, together with a large wooden gear wheel, angular gearbox and a generator from 1925. It is the museum's showpiece.
The museum also displays numerous historic devices and installations from power plants, industry and private households, and illustrates how electricity used to be generated, transmitted and consumed. Models and videos explain the technical relationships, and much can be touched and tried out. The Elektromuseum is part of the Industriekulturpfad Limmat–Wasserschloss (Limmat–Wasserschloss industrial heritage trail). The operator does not state when the museum opened.
