About the museum
The engineer Sidney William Brown, technical director of Brown Boveri & Cie. in Baden, had Villa Langmatt built in 1900/01 for himself and his wife Jenny Sulzer. Between 1908 and 1919, the couple assembled most of their collection of French Impressionists, with works by Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, Cézanne and Gauguin, among others. The Brown family lived in the villa for two generations.
After the death of the last resident, John A. Brown, in 1987, the City of Baden, as sole heir, carried out his wishes: it established the "Stiftung Langmatt Sidney und Jenny Brown" foundation and opened the house and park in 1990 as an Impressionist and period-home museum. The foundation's purpose is to preserve the villa, park and collection and to make them accessible to the public.
What makes it special is that the listed stately villa has been largely preserved with its original furnishings: masterpieces of art history hang in historic living rooms, not in neutral exhibition halls. The house was saved, among other things, through the sale of three paintings by Paul Cézanne from the collection.
From 2024 to 2026, the complex underwent extensive renovation, including restoration of the villa, park and reception building and a new pavilion. Since the reopening in May 2026, the collection can be seen in Baden again; the paintings have been rehung and can now be experienced in the light of the Browns.
