About the museum

With origins in the 16th century, the mill is among the oldest buildings of the Merian Gardens near Brüglingen. Grain was processed in the milling room for centuries; in the time of Christoph Merian in the mid-19th century, wheat, spelt and rye were ground here. No grain has been milled there since 1980, but the water-powered mill wheel is still in working order today.

In the museum you can marvel at the impressive drive mechanism, and the milling room shows vividly how work was done in the past. Historic exhibits also show how milling developed from a Bronze Age craft to industrial production.

Once a month the water wheel is put into operation: visitors help open the sluice gates while the millers explain the mechanism and tell old legends. The Mühlemuseum is located in the middle of the garden grounds, and admission is free.
