About the museum

Kunsthaus Baselland traces its origins to the Kunstverein Baselland, which was founded in 1944 as the Basellandschaftliche Kunstvereinigung with the aim of promoting regional art through exhibitions and acquisitions. For decades the association showed its exhibitions at Schloss Ebenrain in Sissach or had to make do with empty factories, schoolhouses and tram depots. In 1997 it acquired a former factory building on St. Jakob-Strasse in Muttenz, which shortly afterwards opened as its own exhibition venue with around 1,400 square metres of space.

In spring 2024 the institution moved to the Dreispitz site in Münchenstein. There, Buchner Bründler Architekten transformed a former champagne warehouse into an exhibition venue: three newly inserted towers support the concrete structure, bring daylight into the interior and divide the hall into spaces of different heights. The bright foyer is accessible from both sides, serves as a meeting place with a café and a reference library, and can be rented for events. The new building opened in April 2024 with the exhibition "Rewilding".

The programme focuses on contemporary art from the Basel region and places it in an international context; many works are created specially for the venue. The Kunstverein also owns a small collection of just under two hundred works, mainly paintings, prints and drawings by regional artists. At the European Museum of the Year Award 2026, which was held under the theme of inclusion, the Kunsthaus received a "Special Commendation".
