About the museum
The HMAV Bounty Museum in Weinfelden is dedicated to the mutiny on the Bounty on April 28, 1789, and its consequences. The ship had set out for the South Seas in 1787 under Lieutenant William Bligh to bring breadfruit saplings from Tahiti to the Caribbean; the famous mutiny took place on the return voyage. The subsequent journey of around 6,700 kilometers in an open boat is considered one of the outstanding achievements in maritime history, and the descendants of the mutineers still live today on the remote South Sea island of Pitcairn.
The sponsor is the Bounty Club Switzerland, a non-profit association that supports Pitcairn. It grew out of a letter that Bounty enthusiasts sent to the island in 1991, to which a wooden crate containing a carved Bounty model replied more than a year later. Since then the club has kept in contact with the island, organizes Bounty festivals and pirate nights for its benefit, and offers Pitcairn stamps, first-day covers and island handicrafts.
According to the museum itself, it shows the largest private collection on the mutiny on the Bounty. During the guided tours, which take place by appointment only, the club takes guests on a journey back to the 18th century.
