About the museum
Since 1993 the Kunsthalle Arbon has presented contemporary art in the former halls of the metal goods manufacturer Schädler, close to Lake Constance and away from the big cities. Organized as an association, it is supported by the town of Arbon and the canton of Thurgau, and is a member of the Verband der Museen der Schweiz (VMS) and the Verein Schweizer Institutionen für zeitgenössische Kunst.
The building on Grabenstrasse stands on the site of the former town moat and belongs to a complex that the entrepreneur Friedrich August Schädler built in the 1920s and 1930s. The storage hall was built in 1927; the steel hall structure now used by the Kunsthalle and the front building were erected by Schädler in 1934. The walls consist of steel and peat-moss sandwich elements and served as a test structure for a steel house in prefabricated element construction, for which he filed a patent in 1935.
In the distinctive skylit hall, with about 500 square meters of exhibition space, the Kunsthalle usually presents solo positions with spatial, site-specific installations. Regional, national and international artists take turns; young artists often have their first larger solo exhibition here. The house has no collection of its own.
