About the museum
The Museo etnografico della Valle di Muggio was founded as an association in 1980, growing out of efforts to open up new paths for the economic, social and cultural development of the Muggio Valley. It sees itself as a "museum in the territory": rather than merely collecting objects in display cases, it turns the valley's cultural landscape itself into the exhibition space.
The Casa Cantoni in Cabbio is the museum's starting point and information centre. The house presents changing exhibitions, and visitors can pick up material for exploring the valley. The museum's work also includes inventorying and photographically documenting ethnographic objects and collecting oral testimonies.
An example of practical heritage conservation is the reconstruction of the Bruzella mill together with the adjoining stone bridge, which returned to operation in 1996 and today demonstrates historic waterwheel technology. The museum belongs to the network of Ticino ethnographic museums and is recognised by the canton.
