About the museum
The Ciäsa Granda in Stampa was built in 1568–81 by Johannes della Stampa and served as a residence until the early 20th century. In 1952 the Società Culturale di Bregaglia acquired the dilapidated building from the Stampa family; from 1953 to 1955 it was restored under architect Jachen Ulrich Cönz. From around 1959/60, Remo Maurizio gradually developed the house into the Bregaglia Valley Museum of cultural and natural history and art. In 1964 it was placed under heritage protection.
In 1986 the heirs of Diego Giacometti gave the cultural association the studio of Giovanni and Alberto Giacometti, a room built as a hayloft in the 18th century, which Giovanni Giacometti had converted into an artist's studio around 1906. In 1987 to 1989 an underground extension with the Sala Giacometti-Varlin was built.
After Remo Maurizio stepped down as director in 2008, the museum began to reorient itself. In 2021 an architectural competition for renovation and extension was held, which was won by Baserga/Mozzetti; in 2023 a new foundation took over responsibility for the museum.
