About the museum
The Museo Archeologico della Valchiavenna is part of the Museo della Valchiavenna and is linked to the Parco Archeologico Botanico del Paradiso, which has been an integral part of it since 1955. The park, in a panoramic position above Chiavenna, lies within the Riserva Naturale delle Marmitte dei Giganti (Giants’ Kettles nature reserve) and combines geological and botanical features with historic remains such as ancient walls, fortifications and soapstone paving.
The exhibition route takes visitors through the history of the area with finds, reconstructions and educational displays on the life of local communities over time. Four themed sections, each with its own colour, run from prehistory to the Roman period, from soapstone (pietra ollare) as a local resource to Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages; large coloured drawings and archaeological finds illustrate everyday gestures and ancient crafts.
The display also covers the quarrying activities at the Caurga and the transformation of the landscape, showing the relationship between people and the alpine environment.
