About the museum
The Palazzo Castelmur stands in Coltura near Stampa in the Bergell and belongs to the valley municipality. Its core is a patrician house built in 1723 for the Redolfi family. Giovanni Castelmur (1800–1871), who came from the Bergell and became a baron in France, had it extended with a tower-flanked annex in the Lombard-Venetian style; the building work was completed in 1854. Milanese specialists and craftsmen worked on the lavish new furnishings, including the architect Giovanni Crassi-Marliani and the painter Gaspare Tirinanzi.
Inside, the grand bourgeois living world of the couple Giovanni and Anna de Castelmur can be seen. The rooms of the old log house have panelling and wallpaper; in the new building, visitors see the dining room, salon, bedrooms papered in red and green, and four small tower rooms whose walls and ceilings are decorated with murals and trompe-l'œil painting. The childless couple supported the school, church and hospital in the valley and gave the municipality, among other things, the Nossa Dona fortress.
The last descendants of the family sold the building complex with its garden and outbuildings in 1961 to the Bergell district, which converted the palazzo into a museum. Today it is open in summer and houses, besides the permanent exhibition on the Grisons confectioners, who emigrated as pastry cooks throughout Europe, the historical archive of the Bergell of the Società Storica Bregaglia.
