About the museum
The stately building with Renaissance arcades in the lower, historic part of Scuol is known locally as “Chà gronda” (Big House) or “la Clastra” (the monastery). In fact, Eberhard of Tarasp founded a monastery here in 1098, and the very old foundation walls with their tuff-framed gateways may have belonged to that complex. After eventful centuries, the house was generously extended between 1702 and 1704 into its present form.
In 1954 the museum association, founded the same year, took over the building and set up the Lower Engadine regional museum in it. Because the Lower Engadine was predominantly an agrarian landscape until the end of the 19th century, and mechanisation after the Second World War displaced tools and domestic culture, the founders, under the leadership of the cultural promoter Men Rauch, wanted to save evidence of the earlier way of life and building culture.
The residential section includes an entrance hall with a groin vault, a vaulted kitchen with hearth and bread oven, a storeroom with prehistoric finds, parlours from different eras including the oldest surviving Engadine parlour, dated to around 1550, and a library. The agricultural section with the sulèr (entrance hall), barn, forecourt, cowshed and cellars has been left as it was used. The barn also houses a historic mill installation from Ftan, together with a miller's room with a white Engadine stove.
