About the museum
The Museum Laax is housed in a 19th-century building in the old village center, which served as the village dairy until 1969. After the dairy closed, the municipality first acquired the house; later the foundation Pro Laax (Fundaziun Pro Laax) took it over and set up a local museum in it. The official opening took place on July 6, 1980.
The permanent exhibition, under the motto “attenziun tradiziun!”, tells the story and customs of the municipality and traces how the mountain farming village became a tourist resort. On display are, for example, the toys children in the Alpine region played with some two hundred years ago, how the night watchman made his rounds, and the legend of the mountain fairy “Sontga Margriata”, which is said to explain why the alp on the Vorab turned into a glacier.
The collection is supplemented by changing exhibitions on the past, present and future of Laax. Visitors can relax in the museum café; on select Friday evenings, the “Café nocturn” invites guests to a drink in the historic setting, and the rooms are also available for smaller events.
