About the museum

The museum is located in the Casa Cadruvi, built in 1580, directly opposite the Reformed church of Waltensburg/Vuorz. There you can see the most important work of the Waltensburger Meister, an unnamed 14th-century painter: the Passion cycle in fresco technique. The museum opened in 1975 and is an institution of the municipality of Breil/Brigels.

The permanent exhibition in the two north rooms places the master's work in its context. Using exhibits, display panels and multimedia stations, it covers the Middle Ages, the painter himself, his works and places of work in Graubünden, related art, and the painting technique, composition and style of affresco. A newer exhibition area, set up for the jubilee “500 Jahre Freistaat der Drei Bünde,” shows how the frescoes, painted over after the Reformation, were rediscovered and restored.

The village museum Arcun da tradiziun is housed in the same building. It displays everyday objects from the region, mostly from the 19th century, with changing thematic focuses on the daily life of earlier generations. The museum also includes the traditional Pistrin bakehouse in the village section of Sumvitg, where bread can be baked in the wood-fired oven after registration.
