About the museum
The Rehmann Museum opened in 2001 in Laufenburg, where sculptor Erwin Rehmann (1921–2020) worked. It was built as an extension of his studio building so that the physical process of how the works came about remains visible. Studio, residence, foundry, museum and sculpture garden grew into one ensemble over ten construction phases between 1953 and 2001; its concepts and sketches largely come from the artist himself. The shed roof is a distinctive feature; the architects Viktor Bäumlin and Daniel John planned the last extension together with Rehmann.
The museum building became possible in 1996, when the collector and art patron Heinrich Gebert provided the necessary seed capital. The Rehmann family and their sons then founded a foundation, which contributed the studio, the property and a large collection of original works and documents. Further works were donated by supporters.
The house presents a collection from all phases of Rehmann's work, including bronzes and iron sculptures, and the spacious sculpture garden above the Rhine displays large sculptures by the artist. The garden is currently being converted into a near-natural habitat as part of the project "Lebensraum Skulpturengarten".
In addition, the museum holds special exhibitions every year focusing on sculpture; these have included works by Auguste Rodin, Alberto Giacometti and Hans Josephsohn. There is also an accompanying program of music, literature, architecture and philosophy.
